Author of the fiction novel, Backyard Dog, Ms Benzel has lived with up to eight german shepherds at a time of various
ages. Some were rescues, some were fosters for rescue organizations and a couple were purchased from a reputable breeder.
She
served her town as an animal control officer for five years and helped many hundreds of animals survive by rehoming them or
finding rescues/shelters to take them in. She also successfully filled in at a vet clinic for a short stint.
Her husband
served as an ACO for eight years until he passed in 2005.
The book was written for readers to experience what it's like to view the world from a four-footed point of view. Why
are so many dogs euthanized at shelters? Why do so many people believe breeding their pet is profitable or even desirable?
This book guides the reader through one litter's experience on earth
and helps a shelter employee, Risa, discover what is important to her.
